چکیده

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short sequences of noncoding single-stranded RNAs that exhibit inhibitory effects on complementary target mRNAs. Recently, it has been discovered that certain viruses express their own miRNAs, while other viruses activate the transcription of cellular miRNAs for their own benefit. This review summarizes the viral and/or cellular miRNAs that are transcribed during infection, with a focus on the biomarker and therapeutic potential of miRNAs (or their antagomirs). Several human viruses of clinical importance are discussed, namely, herpesviruses, polyomaviruses, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, human papillomavirus, and human immunodeficiency virus.

Scenario and future prospects of microRNAs in gastric cancer: A review

Carcinoma of the stomach is one of the major prevalent and principal causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Current advancement in technology has improved the understanding of the pathogenesis and pathology of gastric cancers (GC). But, high mortality rates, unfavorable prognosis and lack of clinical predictive biomarkers provide an impetus to investigate novel early diagnostic/prognostic m...

LAT-derived microRNAs in HSV-1 target SMAD3 and SMAD4 in TGF-β/Smad signaling pathway

Background: During its latent infection, HSV-1 produces only a miRNA precursor called LAT, which encodes six distinct miRNAs. Recent studies have suggested that some of these miRNAs could target cellular mRNAs. One of the key cell signaling pathways that can be affected by HSV-1 is the TGF-β/Smad pathway. Herein, we investigated the potential role of the LAT as well as three LAT-derived miRNAs ...

miRNA as viral transcription tuners in HPV-mediated cervical carcinogenesis.

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are oncogenic DNA viruses that promote carcinogenic signaling by their oncoproteins mainly E6 and E7. A well-defined promoter regulates expression and enhancer region on HPV genome containing number of cis elements that essentially require a set of cognate host transcription factors to regulate viral promoter gene activity. Expression of these host factor...

miRNA signatures can predict acute liver failure in hepatitis E infected pregnant females

BACKGROUND Acute viral hepatitis E (AVH-E) can often result in acute liver failure (ALF) during pregnancy. microRNAs serve as mediators in drug induced liver failure. We investigated their role as a biomarker in predicting ALF due to HEV (ALF-E). METHODS We performed next generation sequencing and subsequent validation studies in PBMCs of pregnant (P) self limiting AVH-E, ALF due to HEV (ALF-...

A Herpesviral Lytic Protein Regulates the Structure of Latent Viral Chromatin

UNLABELLED Latent infections by viruses usually involve minimizing viral protein expression so that the host immune system cannot recognize the infected cell through the viral peptides presented on its cell surface. Herpes simplex virus (HSV), for example, is thought to express noncoding RNAs such as latency-associated transcripts (LATs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) as the only abundant viral gene pr...
